A Pork Memoir

Mad props to Jeffrey Yoskowitz, a fellow 2011 ROIer for his project Pork Memoirs. They are some seriously funny and interesting reads.

And yes, even I have a Pork Memoir (mentioned ever-so-briefly in my own answers to the Tzniut Project).

Read the memoir -- Wearing Swine on My Sleeve --  here. And be sure to submit your own!

I have to confess that I just don't get this one. Does it matter? Youwerent EATING APORK. Are the people in your community truly so judgmental that they would ke you from wearing a shirt - NOT AN ACTUAL PIG -simply because it references something taboo? this has noth to do with actually eating pork. I find this one really surprising, to be honest.

Interesting project!

@SS -- you would be surprised -- I grew up in a community (Lubavitch)where it was considered inappropriate for children to play with/own anything (toys, clothing items, posters, etc.) that is/has a non-kosher animal -- TEDDY BEARS INCLUDED! When I dated a Lubavitcher in my teenage years (a rebellious act for both of us), as part of a private joke, I bought him a Bugs Bunny doll -- and it was the ONLY "non-kosher" thing he had owned in his entire life...

So I totally get the dirty looks Chaviva got for advertising a pig on her t-shirt (but I will also say that it's differet wearing that tshirt in Woodbury Commons than it would be in Boro Park -- I say keep wearing the shirt!)

I think the point is (if I may be so brave as to speak for you Chaviva...) is that modesty is also a way of being. it isn't just that it was a pig on a shirt - nothing wrong with that one by the books... but that it sends a message of "taking a stab" of halacha. A "So I can't eat it, but I can still wear it!" kinda thing. That just rubs people the wrong way, and I really do understand it.

Though I admit, just a little bit, it makes me wanna go downstairs of my apartment complex wearing a pig shirt... because there is a little part of me that likes to stick it to people. hmmph. probably not a good thing! ;)

Why do the poor piggies always get the "thou art not kosher"-brunt??? Some people don't get half as upset (if at all) when there's a horse, a dog, a bear - need I go on - pictured on a t-shirt or on whatever! There are poloshirts with a crocodile for a logo, and cigarettes with a camel. Although I would never advocate the use of cigarettes, it's not because of the freakin' non-kosher camel. In other words - pigs are not more un-kosher than the other beasties mentioned.

The Curmudgeonly Israeli Giyoret says:

The shirt is meant to be ironic. The fact that you are a religious Jew makes it doubly ironic. Many people, unfortunately, will never grasp irony.

Also, ugh, please forgive ALL MY TYPING MISTAKES. Haven't mastered this iPad yet, it seems.

The Curmudgeonly Israeli Giyoret says:

"Irony". As in "This water tastes irony".

If the irony was lost ... my apologies.

I know plenty of people who wouldn't let anything pig-like into their house, even if it's a book with a pig, let alone that little farm-animal sound toy.
