Becoming Gay

I think this article is really fascinating. And I hope you do, too. It's coming out in the July 10 issue of TIME, so this is just a sneak, but I think it's interesting. Maybe people will stop being such assholes about "gay" being a choice. Though I suppose this may ruin the argument for lesbians ...

From the article: Anthony "Bogaert believes the answer may lie in the mother's immune system. Mothers' bodies naturally recognize boy fetuses as slightly more alien than girl fetuses, since all of us carry sex-specific proteins in our bloodstreams. Some mothers may develop antibodies to those male proteins. In subsequent boy pregnancies, Bogaert theorizes, the antibodies may cross the placenta and affect regions of the fetal brain that determine sexual orientation."

Fascinating, don't you think?

Well Amanda. Frankly this is no use to me if I wanted to become gay. I don't have any older brothers and I can't think of any way to get some...Are there any other ways that men can become gay?

of course, the interesting thing about *that* is, if it's biochemical with regards to in-utero factors, it's no longer "genetic" which is what we've been told for a few years now.

And things that are chemical are "tweakable", whether one likes the idea or not.

The theory they present is pretty far-fetched even if you accept the numbers, though: or rather, I haven't seen any specific basis for it in any of the news reports on this.

In any case, I wouldn't expect anybody to change their opinions of anything based on one report. In the scientific community, one study means very, very little.

peace,
