A Cupcake in Your Eye!

Just finished my Shabbat cooking ... the highlight? Gluten-free cupcakes with some delicious Pillsbury frosting (I'm lazy). Here's Tuvia, er, a cupcake.

The rest of the menu? Carrot Kugel with a GF Chex topping, Corn Kugel, Acorn Squash a la Fall, Roasted Potato Wedges ... and ... what else? Oh right. A Chicken, Mushroom, Onion and Rice thing I threw together in a Dutch Oven. Overall, I'm crazy stoked. If they work well, and you're interested, recipes will fly at you!

Od pa'am, Shabbat Shalom!

Chaviva-I just finished reading some of your old posts describing your journey to Torah Judaism (I hate the term "Orthodox"). I must tell you that I found them very moving. I commented on one 0f your recent posts by saying that there has always been an ambivalent attitude in Judaism towards converts. I hope you know that many(the majority I hope)like myself feel no such ambivalence. Aderaba we greatly admire the commitment and conviction of those who were not born Jewish in taking upon themselves ol mitzvot haTorah.
Rav Uri Sharki once told us in explaining the question of whether Yitro came to Sinai before or after the giving of the Torah, that the torah could not have been given until Yitro came. Why? Because then there would have been a "hava amina" (a premise) that the Torah was only given to the descendants of Jacob. The torah wanted to emphasize that while bnai Yisrael had no choice but to accept the Torah with Mt. Sinai suspended above their heads,Yitro accepted the Torah from his own free will. He was the representative of the souls of all those from among the nations who would accept the Torah in future generations.
May Hashem grant you the blessings of Sarah Rivka Rachel and Leah (converts all!) to build a home among your people, Israel.

I hate to be a nit-picker here, but why are you cooking in disposable pans? (the squash looks lovely, by the way).

@David Thank you *so* much for your kind words :) They mean more to me than you can possibly know.

@Rabbi'sWife It even comes in a nifty easy-to-dispense can! I wrote about it once here: http://www.kosher-critic.com/2010/01/parve-cream-cheese-frosting-in-can.html

@ByTheBay In truth, all I did was take a bunch of chicken, put it in a dutch oven, with a container of chicken stock, threw in a container of fresh mini portabella mushrooms, a good amount of rice, and a variety of spices (fresh minced garlic, onion powder, salt, pepper, etc.). BAM.

@AML When it's just the two of us, I usually cook in disposable pans. Or, rather, to be honest, most of the time I do. It's just *a lot* easier cooking that way :\ Almost everyone we know does. In a small kitchen, with no dishwasher and little space, it just makes life easier. But never fear, we recycle religiously :)

I'm glad to read that you're recycling, but am disappointed to read that you use disposables most of the time and that almost everyone you know does this. You'll be doing your pocketbook and our children's planet a big favor by buying some quality basic cookware and using it.

@aml We have a lot of REALLY nice cookware that we got post-marriage ... but if you didn't process what I said, we have no dishwasher and we have so little counter space that it's constantly taken up by three dish-dry racks that are perpetually full. We don't have the room to wash tons of dishes all the time, so we make do with what we have. It's not a forever situation, but it's what we have to do now. We recycle everything else that is used in our homes, so please don't chastise me for this one necessary choice that we've had to make!

Bummer on the disposable pans but YUM to all the food. Recipes, please? I need to collect some, as I'll be near grocery stores & a real kitchen again soon.

No chastising. I didn't mean it that way. I know what you mean about the dishes. We also have a tiny kitchen and we don't have a diswasher either. We're constantly doing dishes. It never ends. Maybe when my boys get a little older, it will be a good job for them ;).
