Pardon the Interruption

Please excuse me, those of you who value the academic and intellectual integrity of this blog, for a few seconds while I make a very, very girly inquiry to my head-covering female readers (or the attentive man with a head-covering wife).

My hair, which I have decided to just sort of let grow now that I'm covering (it hasn't been longer than VERY SHORT since probably 2001), is at this really awkward length where I can't put it into a pony tail, but a headband doesn't keep all the tiny pieces in check. So a half-hour into wearing any type of tichel or scarf (and don't get me started about how hard it is to wear a hat right now), my hair is flying out of every nook and cranny possible, attempting a not-so-crafty escape.

Is there anything I can put on my head that will keep everything in check? All I can think of is like a knit hat one would wear in the winter that's tight fitting, but I need something smaller, more lightweight, that will keep all of my hair in place until it's long enough to put in a ponytail under my tichel.

Thoughts?

Stay tuned for our regularly scheduled programming, including a rehash of the mechitzah issue.

I sometimes wear a very tight knit cap underneath. It also helps to hold on the tichel. I'll have to find a link for you.

I don't know why Jewish stores don't carry these, but what you want is a hijab bonnet. They're these stretchy tie back underscarves that will deal with the straggly bits and keep your scarf from slipping. I buy them from this last. Her prices are good and she has a wide color selection.

I'm at that stage at the moment too. Yuck. What I find works is a sweatband (like you would use to exercise) under other headcoverings; it moves less than a "standard" headband and helps keep the straggly bits in check.

I'm certainly going to look up that hijab bonnet, though...

Have you tried a pretied tichel? Cover Your Hair sells them and they are fantastic!

My hair is also in that awkward growing out length. I use these headbands: http://www.drugstore.com/qxp206743_333181_sespider/goody/stayput_head_bands_multi_color.htm)

They have rubbery nubs that hold onto the hair and the headcovering. I love them! I got mine at Target

Hey, nice new look!

I'm having the same problem. My friend suggested I use one of those stretchy thin elastic sports headbands. (If you don't know what I'm talking about I can send you a picture of my sister from soccer practice). She wears it right at the hairline and it keeps everything under her sheitel..

I use those Goody stay-put bands ... and they do ABSOLUTELY nothing. They did in the beginning, but now they're completely useless. I try tying lots of little ponytails in my hair to hide under the tichel, but they pull at my hair and don't stay and ... blech.

I think I need to try those wig liners ...

Yes, this is the exact length of my hair right now! Not enough that putting it into a ponytail remotely will keep all of it back, but hair bands leave flyaway hairs too. When I was in Israel and wore a tichel every day in lieu of a hat, I used some cleverly placed bobby pins clipping the hair to the tichel itself one of the days and that seemed to work. I don't think I was so careful as to make sure no hair was showing at all though because I'm not married.

Target often has "newsboy" hats that have elastic at the back that I can just tuck all my short hair into. They are often cotton or vented and are almost always going on clearance.

I'm not married but my mother always used hair nets. They're lightweight and very stretchy.

I'm coming from a different approach: maybe what you think doesn't look neat actually looks really cute! Whenever I see you at shul your head covering always looks so nice! (This is Adina Kastner, by the way.)

Thanks Adina :D

BTW: I *did* wear a hat yesterday for my Social Media adventure into the city, pinned my hair up like CRAZY, and it actually STAYED save a few flyaways. I just looked like the swamp creature when I took my hat off :(
